WATCHDOG GROUP TO TELL FULTON COMMISSIONERS
ATLANTA HUMANE SOCIETY USES INTIMIDATION TACTICS TO SILENCE CRITICS

Members of a local watchdog group will be speaking this Wednesday, Jan 16 at 10am at the Fulton County Commissioners' meeting. They contend that the Atlanta Humane Society kills too many pets at the Fulton County Animal Shelter without ever giving the public a chance to view or adopt any of the animals. The speakers will also say that the Atlanta Humane Society doesn't properly investigate cruelty.

In addition, the speakers will tell the commissioners that contrary to the First Amendment Freedom of Speech laws, those who speak out about the problems with the Atlanta Humane Society have been sued or are threatened with lawsuits by the society. Commissioners will be asked not to renew the Fulton County Animal Shelter contract with the Atlanta Humane Society and to instead form a special subcommittee to investigate the situation.

Janet Weiss, president of local animal welfare organization Stopping Pet Overpopulation Together, Inc states "the Fulton Animal Control under the management of the Atlanta Humane Society is nothing more than a pet slaughterhouse with 11,000 pets killed there annually. These dogs and cats are killed without ever being given the chance of finding a new adoptive home. Not only is the county remise in contracting with the Atlanta Humane Society to operate this facility, but it is hardly ethical for a humane society to take on a contract to kill pets without allowing them an ample opportunity to be adopted."
